Grid-tied electrical system
-
A grid-tied electrical system, also called tied to grid or grid tie system, is a semi-autonomous electrical generation or grid energy storage system which links to the mains to feed excess capacity back to the local mains electrical grid.
-
When insufficient electricity is generated, or the batteries are not fully charged, electricity drawn from the mains grid can make up the shortfall.
-
When batteries are used to store, the system is called battery-to-grid (B2G), which includes vehicle-to-grid (V2G).
How it works
-
Direct Current electricity is passed to an inverter which is grid tied.
-
The inverter monitors the alternating current mains supply waveforms and generates electricity that is phase matched.
-
The DC electrical system is attached to the mains via this mechanism.
-
Because the local system is phase matched, electricity can be drawn from the mains in the situation of a generating shortfall or discharge in batteries.
Small scale start
-
A micro generation facility can be started with a very small system such as a home wind power generation or photovoltaic (solar cells) generation system.
Sell to and buy from mains
-
Although not very feasible, excess generated electricity can be sold to mains in certain municipal areas. Electrical shortfall can be bought from mains at standard tariff rates.
Photovoltaics (PV)
-
Photovoltaics (PV) is the name of a method of converting solar energy into direct current electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photovoltaic effect, a phenomenon commonly studied in physics, photochemistry and electrochemistry.
-
A photovoltaic system employs solar panels composed of a number of solar cells to supply usable solar power.
-
The process is both physical and chemical in nature, as the first step involves the photoelectric effect from which a second electrochemical process takes place involving crystallized atoms being ionized in a series, generating an electric current.
-
Power generation from solar PV has long been seen as a clean sustainable energy technology which draws upon the planet’s most plentiful and widely distributed renewable energy source – the sun.
-
The direct conversion of sunlight to electricity occurs without any moving parts or environmental emissions during operation.
-
It is well proven, as photovoltaic systems have now been used for fifty years in specialized applications, and grid-connected PV systems have been in use for over twenty years.
-
were first mass-produced in the year 2000, when German environmentalists including Eurosolar succeeded in obtaining government support for the 100,000 roofs program.
-
Driven by advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of photovoltaics has declined steadily since the first solar cells were manufactured, and the levelised cost of electricity from PV is competitive with conventional electricity sources in an expanding list of geographic regions.
-
Net metering and financial incentives, such as preferential feed-in tariffs for solar-generated electricity, have supported solar PV installations in many countries. With current technology, photovoltaics recoup the energy needed to manufacture them in 1.5 to 2.5
-
In 2014, worldwide installed PV capacity increased to at least 177 gigawatts (GW), sufficient to supply 1 percent of global electricity demands.
-
Due to the exponential growth of photovoltaics, installations are rapidly approaching the 200 GW mark – about 40 times the installed capacity of 2006.
-
China, followed by Japan and the United States, is the fastest growing market, while Germany remains the world's largest producer, with solar contributing about 7 percent to its annual domestic electricity consumption.
Solar Small Scale Embedded Co-Generation
-
Municipalities all over the South Africa offer lucrative co-generation programs to mobilise the dawn of Solar.
-
Each municipality may have a different policy that offers various advantages to the end user.
-
Small Scale Embedded Co Generation is when a user of electricity also generates electricity.
-
There are usually different policies for residential and commercial in the different municipalities.
-
Solar Panels generate electricity during the day.
-
An Inverter changes the solar generated current from Direct Current to grid compatible Alternating Current.
-
The electricity that is generated by the user during the day supplements the electricity supplied by the grid.
-
When more electricity is generated than required by the user during sunshine hours, this excess is managed by the Inverter and pumped back into the grid
-
The user gets a credit for the amount of units (kWh) pumped back into the grid. (Different municipalities have different Co Generation tariffs.)
-
The grid acts as a huge battery for all the SSEG users.
-
The user can then withdraw the “stored” electricity at times when the sun is not shining.
-
This means one can effectively use solar energy without expensive battery storage.
-
Should a user go on holiday for a long period, the solar generated electricity will pump into the grid and earn credits that will be carried over to the next month.
-
Every calendar month-end is the time when the credit is calculated at the applicable tariff.
-
SSEG users must be net users during a financial year. No monies will be paid but only credits passed for future consumption.
